Book Launch: Baret Magarian "The Fabrications" 630pm Free

The Final event of Baret Magarian's U.S. book tour. For his Oakland debut and only California appearance, Baret will be joined by local writers Hugh Behm-Steinberg, Colleen McKee, and J. de Salvo, each of whom will read from their own works. Lee Foust, a writer and critic from Oakland who lives, like Baret, in Florence, Italy, will moderate a discussion Magarian's arresting new novel, _The Fabrications_, a portrait of celebrity, fiction writing, the conceptual art world, and the guru biz--among other conjuring tricks.

Anglo-Armenian author Baret Magarian grew up in London but now lives in Florence, Italy. He began his career writing features and reviews for the British press, then published fiction in World Literature Today, Journal of Italian Translation, the online magazines El Ghibli, Sagarana, and Voyages. His poetry has appeared in the Florentine magazine Semicerchio and the Australian anthology Contrappasso. His writing has been praised by Jonathan Coe, Bruce Hunter and Mia Lecomte.

Magarian's novel _The Fabrications_ is a wildly inventive comic novel centered around an original and bizarre idea: What if two people’s lives and thoughts became fused through the medium of fiction? Perspicacious, audacious, and irreverent, it's a philosophical hoot!

Hugh Behm-Steinberg’s prose can be found in Gravel, Sand, Grimoire, Joyland, Vestal Review and Pank. He is a shop steward for the adjunct faculty union at California College of the Arts.

J de Salvo is the founder of Pedestrian Press, which has published poetry chapbooks, The Oakland Review, The Bicycle Review, and more. J writes fiction, poetry, and other delightful things.

The Fabrications is a wildly inventive, comic novel centered around an original and bizarre idea: What if two people’s lives and thoughts became fused through the medium of fiction? Part slapstick comedy, skewering the world of art and celebrity, and part visionary meditation on identity, synchronicity, sex, madness and love, The Fabrications abandons realism and attempts to create a parallel, unreal universe that nonetheless offers deep truths about the chaos and beauty of our own. It jostles with dozens of dazzling and grotesque characters, and will take you on an unforgettable ride, lurching among pathos, hilarity and profundity, breaking the rules of fiction in creating something subversive and beautiful.

Presentation and readings to be moderated by our man in Florence (but in Oakland towards the end of May) Lee Foust!
