Oakland's Broadway orignated as a dirt path used by the Ohlone, then became a cattle trail, then a streeetcar line connecting it to Berkeley.
Horace Carpentier, a 26 year old graduate of Columbia University's Law School with political aspirations, incorporated the city of Oakland in 1854.
Moses Chase, captain of the sailing ship Capital sailed from Boston in search of gold in 1849-50 and leased 640 acres of today's Oakland that he called "Clinton" from Vincente Peralta. He never found gold.
Vincente Peralta's father, Don Luis Maria Peralta, was granted the "contra costa," or "bay across," which included Oakland, in exchange for many years of military service under the Spanish crown. The youngest child of 17, Vincente inherited the land that is now Oakland.
