African Book Club: "The Magic of Saida" 7pm Free
For our 22nd installment, we'll be discussing The Magic of Saida, Tanzania-raised, Toronto-based author M.G. Vassanji’s 7th novel. From Giller Prize–winner Vassanji comes the story of Kamal Punja, son of an African mother and an Indian father, who has been living in Canada for forty years. Hisprodigious research provides insight into certain details of the German occupation of East Africa, the Maji Maji rebellion in Tanzania (War of the Waters), the slavery of East Africans and sexual exploitation of African concubines by Indians in Africa, the export of African slaves to India, the resulting African communities in India known as Sidis, and Idi Amin’s atrocities against Asians in Uganda forcing the exodus of Asians to global destinations, including Canada.
Each first TUESDAY we meet over eats/drinks (available for purchase) to discuss the latest, hottest, award-winning, best-selling books out of Africa. All you have to do to join is read as much of the book as you can and show up prepared for a lively (but respectful) conversation. You may attend as few or as many sessions as you'd like.
