NaNoWriMo Presents NaNoLitMo!
The new, exciting, literary reading series for Wrimos and the wide world of local writers who dare to write greatly (or you know, who dare to write anything at all, which counts).
Our next event will feature award-winning authors Lori Ostlund and Anne Raeff. Anne Raeff's short story collection, The Jungle Around Us won the 2015 Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction. The collection was also a finalist for the California Book Award and was on The San Francisco Chronicle's 100 Best Books of 2017 list. Her second novel, Winter Kept Us Warm was just published in February, 2018. Her first novel Clara Mondschein's Melancholia was published in 2002. Raeff's stories and essays have appeared in New England Review, ZYZZYVA, and Guernica among other places. She is proud to be a high school teacher and works primarily with recent immigrants. She too is a child of immigrants and much of her writing draws on her family's experiences as refugees from war and the Holocaust. She lives in San Francisco with her wife, the writer Lori Ostlund, and two cats.
Lori Ostlund’s first book, a story collection entitled The Bigness of the World, won the Flannery O’Connor Award and the California Book Award for First Fiction. Her stories have appeared in the Best American Short Stories and the PEN/O. Henry Prize Stories and in literary journals such as ZYZZYVA and New England Review. Her novel, After the Parade (Scribner, 2015), was a B&N Discover pick and a finalist for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize. She is working on novels two and three as well as a second story collection. She is a teacher and lives in San Francisco with her wife, the writer Anne Raeff, and cats, though she spent her formative years in Minnesota, cat-less.
Come listen to them read, then partake in a mini-writing challenge and enjoy what promises to be a raucous Q&A. Please join our hosts, Rachael Herron and Shannon Monroe, on Thursday, May 24, at 7.00 p.m., at the Octopus Literary Salon, which is located at 2101 Webster in Oakland. Come support your fellow, local authors and help us celebrate NaNoWriMo all year long! Write on!
